Mom’s for Liberty Sues Yolo County Library – Let’s Talk About It, Davis! (An Al’s Corner Exclusive) Boogity Boogity

Yup.  It's happening!   Mom's for Liberty is suing the Davis Library for violating their first amendment rights.

And what better place to discuss it than on the free Davis bloglet that hasn't banned a bunch of people from its comment section:  Al's Corner!!!

Welp — Unlike David Greenwald I'm not going to copy most of the article source material and nest that within a few badly-written sentences of my own.  Nope, I'm just gonna give you the link, and you can read it yourself 😐

Moms for Liberty-Yolo County v. Lopez

https://adfmedia.org/case/moms-liberty-yolo-county-v-lopez

Mostly I wanted to scoop the Davis Greenwald on a major breaking local story.   And I don't even get the paltry drippings of a salary to do so.

But even More Mostly:  let's talk about it, Davis!   This is major shit.

Great news. I hope they not only get a settlement where free speech policies are mandated but also a huge cash reward.
A strong message needs to be sent.

  2. Alan C. Miller

One question: Who is “Lopez” ? Anyone?

  3. Alan C. Miller

Here’s the Enterprise Article by Lauren Keene, published ten minutes ago:
Moms for Liberty files civil-rights lawsuit against Yolo County, library officials
    https://www.davisenterprise.com/news/moms-for-liberty-files-civil-rights-lawsuit-against-yolo-county-library-officials/article_312f7a9a-9393-11ee-9fba-3f3074e6fa5f.html

  4. constitutional rights rule

I hope the city is heavily penalized for the attack on free speech and the librarian and his tax funded supporters are fired.

  5. Keith

    From the Enterprise article:
“Also named as plaintiffs are the religious organization California Family Council, the Independent Council on Women’s Sports, and individuals , Beth Bourne, Allison Snyder, Kim Jones, Clare Erin Friday and Sophia Lorey, whose talk regarding transgender participation in women’s sports triggered the shutdown.”
Don’t mess with Beth. Good for her.

  6. Darelldd

Yay for all lawyers winning! Yay for all taxpayers losing!
…. if I understand the sentiment so far.

  7. Alan C. Miller

I think poor “Lopez” is in a heap of hot water.

  8. Keith

    Yay for free speech winning,
    …hopefully

  9. Darelldd, to quote a friend of mine: “One thing you can count on is that the lawyers always win.”

  10. Keith

“One thing you can count on is that the lawyers always win.”
True, but it takes lawyers for free speech and people who have been wronged like Beth and her associates to get their day in court and hopefully win.

  11. Alan C. Miller

KO, but I don’t think it was primarily BB that was wronged, except in a legal sense. Who was wronged is all of us. If there were a group advocating for transgender rights at a library in Newton, Kansas, I would want that their event was held and not shut down by a conservative idealist librarian. Free speech is free speech, baby!
While some may think the taxpayer cost is the fault of BB/M4L, government employees not thinking that their personal political agenda is above the constitution of the United States would have prevented this lawsuit from ever having to have filed. BB/M4L will prevail, because US constitution. As would in opposite circumstances in my Kansas example above.

  12. Keith

I agree Alan, everyone should’ve been outraged when free speech rights were denied at the library no matter what side of the political aisle you come from.

  13. Beth Bourne

thanks, Alan. I appreciate you sharing your Kansas example.
Government officials, including librarians, cannot shut down speech just because they don’t like it.

  14. South of Davis

I agree with Allen 100% that:
“If there were a group advocating for transgender rights at a library in Newton, Kansas, I would want that their event was held and not shut down by a conservative idealist librarian. Free speech is free speech, baby!”
When I was a kid it seemed like “most” people were open minded moderates like me and Alan and only a few people were on the “far right” and “far left”.
Today it seems like “most” people in Davis would vote to ban anyone with views to the right of former Governor Pete Wilson from entering a library and “most” people people in conservative red states would vote to ban anyone to the left of Bill Clinton from entering a library.
With judges moving to the left in blue states and to the right in red states I don’t expect Mom’s for Liberty to win much (or the Davis librarian to lose his job) just like I would not expect anything to happen to a red state librarian that kicked out people with left of center views.

  15. Alan C. Miller

I have no interest in anyone losing their job. This should not be about punishment, but rather about clarifying that unpopular ideas can be heard in public spaces, and that protests that are peaceful can be staged in opposition. That’s how the Colin Wright talk went. The talk went through, anyone in opposition was invited to join the meeting and speak, and protestors were outside peacefully protesting with signs.
That’s how it is supposed to happen.
By the way, I only went to that event because I heard words were going to be spoken that were so awful they should not be heard. So of course I had to go hear what these words were. I heard this from those opposed to the event occurring. Before that meeting, I’d never heard of Colin Wright, Beth Bourne nor Moms for Liberty.

  16. Keith

“By the way, I only went to that event because I heard words were going to be spoken that were so awful they should not be heard. So of course I had to go hear what these words were. I heard this from those opposed to the event occurring. ”
So did you hear any awful words from any of the event speakers?

  17. Alan C. Miller

“Awful” is in the eye of the beholder.
    Unless there is violence.
But these days I’m told “silence is violence” and “words are violence”, so despite the event being peaceful, everyone was violent. Unless they just mumbled and murmured so they were neither silent nor using words.
. . . and that’s why it’s a good idea not to let political movements change the definition of words for an entire society.

  18. Keith

‘. . . and that’s why it’s a good idea not to let political movements change the definition of words for an entire society.’
You mean words or phrases like “biological men”?

  19. Alan C. Miller

I know nothing. I see nothing.

  20. Keith

Well this biological man hopes that Beth and her associates get awarded million$.

  21. Ron O

    Great discussion, here.
Not to “blast” the community at large, but I suspect that a lot of folks don’t think that the librarian did anything wrong.
And THAT’s the problem, which the lawsuit might bring to light.

  22. South of Davis

I’ve noticed that the people chanting “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” are usually the same people that want to shut down a meeting where anyone says “From Grammar school to College, girls should be free from competing against boys in sports”…

  23. Keith

What, no article written by David Greenwald in this morning’s Vanguard about the library lawsuit filed by Beth and her associates?
    I’m shocked!
Maybe the Vanguard is devastated because they were scooped by Al’s Corner and the Davisite?

  24. K Smith

Keith O should have someone following him around constantly playing “Pick a little, talk a little” from “The Music Man.”
I’ve never seen so much petty gossip and picking since sixth grade.
    Rent free!
Pick a little talk a little, cheep cheep cheep
talk a lot pick a little more
Grown men. You can’t make this shit up.
And maybe Keith can simp a bit more for the local M4L chair. His obsequious attempts to gain her attention are comical and pathetic.
Maybe the recent news about the proclivities of the M4L national founder gives Keith reason to remain hopeful.

  25. Colin Walsh

Let’s give DG a break. It’s going to be hard to come up with significantly shitty legal analysis to suggest the library was in the right to shut down the presentation.

  26. Ron O

Grown men. You can’t make this shit up.
    Define “men”.

  27. Alan C. Miller

K Smith – this isn’t BB’s facebook page. I’ll publish meaningless carp, but I’d prefer the discussion here doesn’t break down to hollow and meaningless name calling.
How about we discuss the issues? Oh that’s right, you are perfectly correct, so your position is written in tablets from God. We are the infidels. I forgot. We must be also be —
    Walter Shwe
Beth Young Bourne In the end the bigots over there will get what they richly deserve. It won’t be nice.

    — threatened ?
WS – who you calling bigots, specifically? And what ‘do they richly deserve’ that ‘won’t be nice’. When you threaten people, fuckhead, be a little clearer. Will you be the one carrying out the threats, or will it be the magic hand of YOUR GOD ?

  28. Beth Bourne

    Robert O to K Smith –
    Define “men”.
I love it. Thanks for the laugh.

  29. Keith

Hi Beth, you certainly have stirred up many of the lefties in town.
Wow, some seem all in a huff both here and on Beth’s FB page because Beth and her legal team submitted a lawsuit against the library for denying free speech.
All I have to say is DEAL WITH IT!

  30. Alan C. Miller

  31. R Keller

In the exhibits to the filed lawsuit under Exhibit D there is an email from Gloria Partida dated Feb. 6, 2023, that includes the statement “Unfortunately we must allow free speech in public spaces.”
I wouldn’t say that’s an optimal viewpoint for a government official to express.

  32. R Keller

It occurs to me that with the disdain that the Davis City Council treats the public comment period at their meetings (and their enthrallment with their own voices), they should have Partida’s comment on a huge banner above the dais:
“Unfortunately we must allow free speech in public spaces.”

  33. Ron O

“Unfortunately we must allow free speech in public spaces.”
That statement does indeed explain a lot. (Beyond Gloria, as well.)

  34. Alan C. Miller

Anyone like to go in for a run of “Unfortunately we must allow free speech in public spaces.” t-shirts ?

  35. Keith

“Anyone like to go in for a run of “Unfortunately we must allow free speech in public spaces.” t-shirts ?”
And where them to the next Davis city council meeting during public comment?

  36. Ron O

Given that my comments are sometimes being posted “twice”, I might have to wear two of those T-shirts simultaneously.
(Some kind of technical problem, apparently. Or maybe an evil twin.)

  37. Beth Bourne

I appreciate you sharing the not-a-fan-of-free-speech quote from Gloria Partida. Alan, Ron, R Keller (and Keith) you guys are funny.
Would love to have you comment on my facebook videos and PRA record response – it’s all set to public and there is no moderating so it’s free for all with libtards vs trumpsters and everything in between.

  38. M Thomas

“Unfortunately we must allow free speech in public spaces.” G Partida
Really Gloria? You’re an elected official and sworn protector of the Constitution.
The entire city council needs to be replaced.
