Yup.  It's happening!   Mom's for Liberty is suing the Davis Library for violating their first amendment rights.

And what better place to discuss it than on the free Davis bloglet that hasn't banned a bunch of people from its comment section:  Al's Corner!!!

    KO, but I don’t think it was primarily BB that was wronged, except in a legal sense. Who was wronged is all of us. If there were a group advocating for transgender rights at a library in Newton, Kansas, I would want that their event was held and not shut down by a conservative idealist librarian. Free speech is free speech, baby!
    While some may think the taxpayer cost is the fault of BB/M4L, government employees not thinking that their personal political agenda is above the constitution of the United States would have prevented this lawsuit from ever having to have filed. BB/M4L will prevail, because US constitution. As would in opposite circumstances in my Kansas example above.

    I agree with Allen 100% that:

    When I was a kid it seemed like “most” people were open minded moderates like me and Alan and only a few people were on the “far right” and “far left”.
    Today it seems like “most” people in Davis would vote to ban anyone with views to the right of former Governor Pete Wilson from entering a library and “most” people people in conservative red states would vote to ban anyone to the left of Bill Clinton from entering a library.
    With judges moving to the left in blue states and to the right in red states I don’t expect Mom’s for Liberty to win much (or the Davis librarian to lose his job) just like I would not expect anything to happen to a red state librarian that kicked out people with left of center views.

    I have no interest in anyone losing their job. This should not be about punishment, but rather about clarifying that unpopular ideas can be heard in public spaces, and that protests that are peaceful can be staged in opposition. That’s how the Colin Wright talk went. The talk went through, anyone in opposition was invited to join the meeting and speak, and protestors were outside peacefully protesting with signs.
    That’s how it is supposed to happen.
    By the way, I only went to that event because I heard words were going to be spoken that were so awful they should not be heard. So of course I had to go hear what these words were. I heard this from those opposed to the event occurring. Before that meeting, I’d never heard of Colin Wright, Beth Bourne nor Moms for Liberty.

    “Awful” is in the eye of the beholder.
    Unless there is violence.
    But these days I’m told “silence is violence” and “words are violence”, so despite the event being peaceful, everyone was violent. Unless they just mumbled and murmured so they were neither silent nor using words.
    . . . and that’s why it’s a good idea not to let political movements change the definition of words for an entire society.

    Not to “blast” the community at large, but I suspect that a lot of folks don’t think that the librarian did anything wrong.
    And THAT’s the problem, which the lawsuit might bring to light.

    In the exhibits to the filed lawsuit under Exhibit D there is an email from Gloria Partida dated Feb. 6, 2023, that includes the statement “Unfortunately we must allow free speech in public spaces.”
    I wouldn’t say that’s an optimal viewpoint for a government official to express.

    It occurs to me that with the disdain that the Davis City Council treats the public comment period at their meetings (and their enthrallment with their own voices), they should have Partida’s comment on a huge banner above the dais:
