Erosion of both ideals and accountability

By Matt Williams

I just came back from the Supervisors meeting at the County Offices. One of the ceremonial items was a recognition of Juneteenth 2026. One of the public comments was delivered by Garth Lewis, Yolo County Superintendent of Schools. There were two very resonant phrases he used in his remarks:

1) dealt with the importance of monitoring that our ideals (at all levels, but especially as a community) are being realized in our practices. He went on to say that ideals lose their value if we don’t consistently put them into practice.

2) he noted that we are living in times where “accountability is being undercut in this country every day.” That isn’t just a national problem, or a Trump problem. We have seen that play out in blinking neon letters in Measure V.

  1. Yolo County election officials reported at 1:15 AM that Measure V had received 5,275 “Yes” votes and 5,748 “No” votes, which translates to 47.85 percent support compared to 52.15 percent opposition, and a margin of 473 votes.

Election officials had not yet indicated how many ballots remain outstanding, but looking at the June 2022 election for some context, a total of 19,787 Yes and No votes were counted in that election. If the turnout for this election ends up being similar to that election, then we are 55% of the way along in the current ballot count.

The way the Governor race worked out in this election, a whole lot of Democrats held on to their ballots until the last minute, so getting close to 19,787 is still possible.

I initially misunderstood your posting, as I initially thought that the superintendent said something negative about Measure V. But in looking at it more closely, I realized that part of the comment was coming from you.

It would surprise me if a Yolo county superintendent said anything negative about Measure V (Village Farms).

Davis’ school district, for example, was in full-fledged support of Village Farms (and any other development that they believe would help them avoid “right-sizing” their system).
