I'm tired of being optimistic about the new year.  Since Covid-19, we've all hoped the next new year would bring better times, but each subsequent year since 2020 has sucked, culminating with the October 7th Invasion & War and Increased Hatred of Groups of People.  And our City Council ?  NOT HELPING.

People suck.

But, as R.O. says:  "we do go after the Vanguard on here".  And that is the most important thing — even more important than world peace.

Some annoying woketivist reminded me that David Greenwald was living rent-free in my head.  So I informed DG that I'm now charging him $3000/mo for rent. 

2024 will undoubtedly suck more than 2023.  I also believe some angry narcissist is going to set off a nuke in 2024.  That'll make the argument over who called in the Davis bomb threats moot.  Stock up on iodine, folks!

SUBJECT:  "Editor’s Note: The Good, the Bad and the Ridiculous"  [2day's vansplard]

Well, 2023 ended with a boom. 
 
I predict 2024 will also end with a boom.  Only long before the end of the year.  Iodine, folks.
 
The good news in the last six days the Vanguard raised $13,000. 
 
"Good" is a value judgement.
 
WS say:  "It’s actual science Beth, but your own experiences have blinded you to that widely recognized fact."
 
Taking a break in the middle of the article.  The last vestige of woke-ism:  "It's science"  Actually, science is a process of challenge, theory and confirmation, not a religion of a set facts.  And now back to our regularly featured tearing apart of things written in the Vanguard:

The bad news… that just gets us through the payroll this month.

"Bad" is a judgement call.

I remember when $13,000 would set us up nicely for a few months.  Now it’s barely a month.  That’s ridiculous but at the same time, it’s okay.

It's okay?  What's okay?  Horrible, society-killing inflation?  "Okay" then.

We’re on the verge of doing some great stuff this year. 

Sounds like y'all are also on the verge of running out of cash.

The biggest news coming into the new year is that we are working to launch (finally) our new website. 

Oh goody.  "Finally" — You can say that again.   Of course, now that I'm banned and the comments are a woke suckfest echo-chamber (plus KO for as long as he lasts), I don't give a flying fuck that the edit feature might actually work before it times out.  Which is all I ever asked.  Oh that and a new moderator.  But a website format fix, well, it won't fix that.

This will be our first new website since 2014. 

Seems longer ago than that.

I have seen the prototype for it and it looks nice and clean.

I can't wait not to use it.

The continued Vanguard Court Watch and what that program means not only for the Vanguard but for all the interns—all three of them had formerly been interns and soon all three will be in law school.

Just what we need, more indoctrinated, woketivist lawyers.

The rolling out of our prison watch internship where we will be taking the concept of the court watch and helping to train incarcerated people in journalism.

"We" ?  Who is the "we" that will be doing this training?  Intern future lawyers?  Prison guards ?  Prison "Van" guards ?

Our future high school journalism training program where we will be taking inner city kids and helping them go to college by training them in journalism, the law, and writing.

You will be teaching writing to young people?  Seriously?  Is this The Onion?  The Babylon Bee?   The irony police called and they want all of your English teachers incarcerated for the harm done to your readers.  After awhile, we all become just a little bit worse writers ourselves:  "Trickle down" immigrammatical exposure.  But of course, your future woketivist lawyers will decarcerate your English teachers.  So it'll all be alright.

I pause to thank all of you who donated in 2023 and especially those who helped in the critical drive down the stretch—you made this all possible.

Yeah, thanks, Butt Heads.  What were you thinking?

It should be a fun year.

    Speaking of “going after the Vanguard”, I’ll repost a couple of comments below from the December “corner”, per Al’s suggestion. (They don’t automatically appear, when comments reach more than 100.)

    From today’s “give me money” article, in the Vanguard:
    David: “I remember when $13,000 would set us up nicely for a few months. Now it’s barely a month.
    That’s ridiculous but at the same time, it’s okay.”
    I can think of some much better words (than “okay”) to describe this, in regard to the Vanguard’s stated guiding principles.

    I see the following comment from Beth on DJUSD’s Facebook page:
    “Happy New Year, 2024 is going to be a great one ♥️💙♥️

    please schedule a community ‘study session’ on gender identity policies, activities, and curriculum in the k-12 schools before the March vote on Measure N, the new $800 school parcel tax.”
    I bolded the text that I find amusing, since I already noted something similar (but from DJUSD’s perspective): That is, those associated with DJUSD are likely trying to tie-in “trans rights” with support for Measure N.
    With the implication that you must be “anti-trans” if you don’t support Measure N.
    My guess is that this is a winning strategy, for DJUSD.
    (Not sure who, exactly, is behind the “Davis is for Everyone” signs around the city.)

    There’s a reason that there’s “rails” that go from Davis to Woodland. All the better to run them out of town, on. Tied-up and wearing signs, stating that there’s more than two genders.
    Though truth be told, I don’t think that Woodland is all that different from Davis these days. (Some from the Davis Phoenix Coalition appear to be at work there, as well.)

    I am starting to see some price cuts for existing housing in Davis (and throughout the state). (I like to look at Zillow listings.)
    In any case, if I was looking to buy a house in Davis, I’d definitely be looking at the following example. (I don’t have any connection to this listing, or any other listing.)
    But yeah, if you can’t afford $720K for a very decent house, I’m not sure what to tell you. A lot better than whatever complicated shell game that Covell Village is planning.

    For this plan: don’t forget the basic Vanguard business model of generating multiple articles per day through blatant plagiarizing and faking dateline locations! You can do this through “repurposing” articles written by actual news organizations or by simply re-printing press releases while not identifying them as such. Easy-peasy!

    I feel that it is my duty and a public service to report that there is a housing article in the Davis Vanguard today. Please stop whatever you are doing and go read it.
    It is the 3rd day of the year, and already there are: wait for it — three articles on the housing “crisis”. Tomorrow – four ???
    I think we should build housing. I’ve voted for each of the Measure J projects, except for the Carson Express. I’m in favor of building large buildings in the downtown core.
    But I’m not voting for any more Measure J projects. Because of David Greenwald and his weird obsession with housing while allowing deletion of comments thus making his blog a joke, Dan Carson, the developers who hired Dan Carson while he was on the City Council, Scott Weiner and his housing laws, and Gavin Newsom, who will probably be President, God help us, and then these housing overreaches will go national! Vice President Weiner anyone?
    Also my now voting NO on everything is in protest to Measure J itself, which is a stupid law.
    Anyway, I’ve joined Our Neighborhood Voices. They are like the anti-Weiner. They are against these overreaches. Even though our Council is too pro-developer-no-matter-what-because-of-the-housing-crisis, at least what we need is local control of development back, instead of the state sticking it’s arm into our loo.

    Thought I’d see what 48 Hills is reporting, regarding Wiener and the other housing Nazis.
    The argument is politically solid: The state is threatening to take away funding for essential city services, including affordable housing, and take away almost all local land-use controls, if developers don’t build a huge amount of new market-rate housing in San Francisco—but developers aren’t building much of anything right now, and the city can’t force them to.
    The Planning Commission and the supes have already passed all of the “constraint reduction” bills the state asked for. That’s all they can do.
    “We cannot force developers to build and yet new legislation would seek to penalize San Francisco anyway,” the letter states.

    It’s written by someone from “Interfaith Housing Justice Davis”. Which makes me wonder why they didn’t single out the churches in Davis which don’t want housing on “their” tax-free land.

    Legal Services of Northern California argued that there is an overconcentration of proposed sites in this area. We agree.
    Isn’t Legal Services the same organization that’s making an implied threat regarding Measure J?
    And yet, they’re siding with the referenced church in opposition to rezoning their land to accommodate housing?
    Something stinks around here, and it isn’t Measure J.

    David is putting forth the usual falsehoods regarding housing in the Vanguard, today:
    “. . . council members in the last few months have noted that Davis cannot address its housing needs with just infill—and we all know that peripheral housing means a Measure J vote at this time and that could be its own mess.”
    Again, San Francisco (and just about every other locale along the coast) is NOT expanding outward in regard to RHNA targets. It’s that simple.
    But David continues to put forth a theory that the state will “view” Davis differently than these other locales, simply because there is farmland outside of city limits (which in David’s mind, is ripe for sprawl). NOTHING in state law provides the state with authority to do so, nor was it the original intent of the state to promote sprawl.
    In any case, it’s certainly nice to see that some of San Francisco’s representatives have had enough, and are seeking to sue the state over impossible targets.
    Per the link in David’s article (to 48 Hills):

    This is not going to end well for the state. Very few cities, if any, will actually meet the state’s targets.

    Kind of disappointed – no new housing advocacy article in the Vanguard, today.
    I’m revved-up, and ready to take them on. Did they run out of gas this early in the new year?
    At this rate, they’ll never even manage to get a measure on the ballot, in their attempt to overturn Measure J.
    Personally, I think they should try to overturn Measure J while they SIMULTANEOUSLY try to win approval under Measure J for Covell Village, Act II.
    In other words, go for a “two-fer” on the same ballot. Try to win one way, or the other. Or both ways.
    And have Scott Wiener count the ballots.

    From today’s Vanguard housing article (as referenced by Alan M.):
    David: “To me, this is the real problem. We need to address housing, homelessness, and poverty in California. These problems are leading to declining population which is making the problems even more difficult to address.”
    The first sentence is in direct conflict with the second sentence. Obviously, if the population is declining, housing becomes more available.
    This basic lack of logic is inherent in all of David’s housing advocacy, but he is unfortunately not alone in (purposefully?) refusing to acknowledge it. In fact, this type of outlook is driving state policy – largely as a result of business interests who meddle in state politics.
    Same issue regarding schools, also cited in that article. Declining enrollment itself is not a “problem” to be fixed. Instead, it’s the oversized school system that needs fixing.
    Schools exist to serve communities, not the other-way around. Why is this concept so difficult for some to grasp?
