Yet more lies from the Eric Jones campaign

By Roberta Millstein

Fellow Davisites, time and time again I promise myself that this is my last post about Eric Jones. And time and time again, he does something more outrageous and I feel obligated to call it out.

Now he’s using the more than $15 million of his venture capitalist money — or perhaps it’s his millions of donated tech oligarch money — to tell even more lies about Thompson. (Remember this lie that Rep Zoe Lofgren had to call out?)

His former campaign staffers are standing by him, though, to correct the record:

Eric Jones’s campaign has been all lies and deceptions, from the moment he called himself a “businessman” and not a venture capitalist, through more lies about his own campaign (e.g.,his howler of a claim about not taking corporate PAC money) and other lies about Thompson, and now to this. Low, low, low.

Eric Jones is not fit for public office.

Why isn’t someone suing him for libel?

    1. Excellent question. Maybe only multi-millionaires like Eric Jones have the time and money to do things like that? (his wealth has been estimated at over $80 million, which it would have to be to be able to drop $15 million into his campaign just like that).

Libel: very difficult for a public figure to prove libel and the timing of court cases makes it impractical in campaigns

Roberta: The latest, I came across the news pieces about Jones leading Thompson by several points in jones-paid polls. Worst reporting on campaign polling I’ve seen in forever! That the these mainstream large circulation news sites would just put those out without any attempt to examine the veracity of the polling when it was paid for by Jones. Nothing reported about response rates or sample balancing or English Spanish nothing. And it’s hard to do polling like that in these rural areas that don’t get a lot of study as a rule. So the actual result part, I find highly questionable
of course there’s Jones quote about how those poll results made him feel which sounds like he won the miss universe contest. It’s an embarrassment. The research went right from the research shops to the campaign, so who knows how they were sliced or diced or manipulated to come up with the very similar spreads in different surveys. And it’s not like polling needs any more reasons to undermine peoples perceptions of it. (So my background is political survey research and teaching journalism, which is why this particular development got me so bent out of shape.)
I actually saw Jones and Thompson in a very early candidate forum and came away with a very strong impression that Jones is really not up to the task. To summarize, he does not have the temperament for it.
.It will be close. It will be important for people who see what he is and don’t like him to push everybody they know to vote for Thompson.

    1. Yeah, it’s been absolutely *terrible* reporting on those self-funded polls, simply reprinting what the Jones campaign fed them. Thanks for the extra insights into just how bad that reporting was.

I remember after the KCRA debate, Jones proclaimed that he “won.” After Thompson mopped him a second time in the LWV debate, he didn’t try that again. But yeah, he seems to like to proclaim himself a winner. Agreed, we need to keep getting the word out in these last few days about who Jones really is.

A made to order poll days before the actual poll that counts. It continues to amaze me how easily so many have been bought off.

To my friends I would paraphrase Sir Thomas More: It profits a man nothing to give his soul for the world, but for the 4th Congressional district?

      2. Too many Davis progressives have shown themselves not to be critical thinkers. They formed an opinion early based on nothing other than some conversations with a con man and have refused to rethink their original impressions even in the face of overwhelming evidence that Jones is NOT who he says he is.

  4. […] It allows him to buy polls of unknown methodology and get press coverage for them. Our underfunded media is no match for that kind of money, […]
