District Attorneys are public servants. Is there any more powerful “servant” than one who wields the power of life and death?
What troubles me is that in California, there are no term limits for District Attorneys. That’s right – California District Attorneys can stay in office as long as they want unless they’re voted out. I didn’t know this, and I bet some of you didn’t either. Jeff Reisig has been Yolo DA for 12 years already, and wants to make that 16!
What concerns me is this: if communities change over time, shouldn’t we also change who is in this most important county office? Shouldn’t we need someone who will come in with a fresh perspective and range of experience to meet the changed and changing needs of our community?
To tell you the truth, I am not willing to ignore the risks of a comfortable incumbency, like the one Jeff Reisig has enjoyed. Is he immune from entitlement, complacency, arrogance? For the reasons of fairness, and of human nature, shouldn’t we think about term limits for the very powerful public office of District Attorney?
Fortunately, rather than go to all the trouble of creating a term limits agenda, and putting it on the ballot, there is another way. Dean Johannson, dedicated public servant (just look at his resume), is asking for our vote in this upcoming election.
He wants to serve the current community, and, as a candidate, he has been interacting at Farmer’s Markets, community events, candidate forums and at people’s homes. He’s speaking with regular people—and listening to them—to find out who we are and what we want our District Attorney to do on our behalf.
When is the last time you talked to Jeff Reisig about your values and how you’d like to see them represented by the DA’s office? Reisig has had his turn; he’s had three, to be exact! The times require a new District Attorney for Yolo County. Please join us in voting for Dean Johannson for District Attorney.
