Please don’t eliminate my favorite commissions!

Please don’t eliminate my favorite commissions!

Sung to the tune of "These are a Few of My Favorite Things"

Bicycles merging, with streets so confusing,

Commissions combined, in a plan so amusing,

Circulation and mobility, now in one pot,

But the name's so vague, it's like it's been forgot.

Fiscal and budget, mixed with utilities,

In a brand new commission, causing such unease,

Equity and culture, mashed up for show,

But what does it mean? No one seems to know!

Each has their own special and unique missions

Please don’t eliminate my favorite commissions!

Names getting longer, but meanings so vague,

Is this a path forward, or just wild craze?

Climate and justice, in one big merge,

But where's the clarity? It's like a dirge,

Environmental and trees, now in one fold,

But are they still heard, in this new mold?

Historic and planning, a mismatch it seems,

Two different missions, now in their dreams,

Preserving our past, clashes with change,

In this jumbled mess, will anything remain?

Each has their own special and unique missions

Please don’t eliminate my favorite commissions!

Names getting longer, but meanings so vague,

Is this a path forward, or just wild craze?

Commissions with voices, now lost in the din,

In the name of efficiency, where do we begin?

With functions all muddled, and names so obtuse,

Will this new order, be a win or a ruse?

So here's to the critics, who raise voices high,

In the face of this plan, they won't just comply,

For clarity's sake, and for missions that matter,

Let's rethink these mergers, before it all shatters !!!

But really my song is crap (thanks for the crap song ChatGPT).  I lead you here to watch the entire public comment segment, which was excellent.  And if you want to feel queasy, watch the Council comments.  Except for Donna who tried to rein in the process.

Because the process sucked.

    That was fun!
Yeah, I just listened to the meeting. Classic example of bloodless governmental violence. . Except from Neville, though I’m not happy with her final vote.
So on the one hand, they are restructuring some commissions due to requirements of the general plan process, and on the other – at least according to Arnold – commissions aren’t really a good place for engagement on the issue.
And the detail, if I heard it correctly, that the chairs of two commissions were not spoken to at all even though the subcommittee report said that they were.
It’s likely that anyone watching who
was considering joining a commission has now turned firmly against the idea.
I really appreciate that many chairs and vice chairs, former chairs and others came into speak or called in.
I’m not sure what it’s like in other towns, but it seems like we need more checks and balances. For example, legislation that creates bodies formed by the state but populated by people who would typically be on a city commission. They would give advice to the council, but wouldn’t be answerable to them. Just an idea
