Hello Davis! We have an exciting opportunity for you TOMORROW (June 9, 2018)! Come out and try your hand at something called 19th century base ball. We play America's pastime with 1864 rules. No gloves (scary)! But, it's an underhand pitch, which makes fielding easier. AND, you may catch the ball off one bounce and still get the striker out! It's a fantastic version of baseball that is perfect for a very wide range of talent. If you're a youngster or an old-timer, a guy or a gal, a seasoned veteran of the modern game or a novice, you're on a very similar level with each other. This is a game that has rules that really level the playing field.
It's family-friendly. It's all about history, education, community, and culture. It's far less about winning baseball games. Oh, and I should mention that we received funding for the program through California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, which makes this 100% completely FREE to anyone who wants to give it a try. Come learn about Davis and Sacramento Valley history and see if you can figure out how to field a ball with a glove on. Everyone who tries it loves it! Come give it a try tomorrow at 1:00pm at Civic Center Field, right behind Davis City Hall between A and B Streets.
This is a startup project, so we need as many people as we can get to start re-creating teams that existed around here in the 1860s (i.e., the Davisville Oletas, the Tribunes of Woodland, the Dixon Aetnas, and the Sacramento Base Ball Club). So come on out and bring a friend. Forget your wallet or purse though because there is no need to bring cash :-)
Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow afternoon to support Central Valley Vintage Base Ball.
Cheers and hurrah!
